Take 3 people and ask how they feel about gold. You will probably get either one of these 3 different answers, that are the characters of this movie. At the beginning of the film two men and an old man set out to find gold and have to overcome many hurdles to get their well earned treasure. the first man (Fred Dobbs) is a white beggar in Mexico, he has lost all his gambling bets and is skint, yet he still has pride in himself and like some people he thinks that this gold will make him a billionaire and will spend it all if he makes it out alive. The second less arrogant man(Bob Curtain) ,who has a honest personality and a compelling attitude about people, wishes to use his share of the gold to make others and himself happy. Bob is also shot near the end only to be found by the old man who helped him recover from Fred going slowly gold crazy and shooting him in the chest showing another sign of true gold. Like some gold-diggers. and the third final man who is an old prospector believes like a majority of people that old can change men's souls but is always willing to go and find well earned treasure.
The true meaning of this film is that friendship and happiness is much more precious than anything. At one part of the film a native tribe who are poor and reliant, have a child who nearly drowned and is suffering from shock. and the old man is asked to help but when he does all of the town come and hope for this poor boy hoping that a random old man can save this child. Showing true treasure and riches: kindness.
. Leaving the story tied of any loose ends. The old prospector goes and lives with the village people and Curtins goes to work on a farm back at the town. All of this shows that no one is the main character except the gold itself. This revelation to me showed that sometimes gold can really be the true fools gold. Why? I telepathically hear you think. Because gold has no value, just as the prospector said "nothing is worth anything unless you put work into finding it... I ask you in these last few sentences of work. "what is gold actually worth if its laying round everywhere?" and if wood was hidden beneath layers of rock" Milo Geoghegan - 2014
P.S
I personally think that things can be criticised by a numerical opinion but if your an Oompah Loompa 6/10 got a bit boring around the middle section.
